Gastown is Vancouver’s heart and soul, a great part of the city’s heritage, and today one of its most frequented neighborhoods. The center of town is adorned with a statue of Jack Deighton, who in his days known as “Gassy Jack” because he talked nonstop. Deighton was the proprietor of a rustic saloon, which became so popular among regional mill workers that they built an entire town around it.
